- noun A coarse species of knotweed or jointweed, Polygonum Sachalinense, from the Russo-Japanese island of Saghalin, recently introduced into the United States as a forage-plant, but used chiefly for planting as a screen or cover in rough and waste places. It sends up shoots several feet high, bearing very large ovate-oblong leaves and axillary clusters of small greenish flowers.
