Did some overzealous conservator remove some blue scumbles or glazes?
My idea is to add some freeform scumbles over the top in a riot of colours but just tiny bits here and there.
There, among them all, the painter bends over his canvas seeking to perfect the glazes and scumbles of his pearly tints, or trying to realize some dream of a face that haunts his fancy with its exquisite smile.
When I discovered the early watercolors at the Farnsworth about 10 years ago I stood right up to the surface of these paintings to see all the washes and brush scumbles and tears and splatters.
