The original 5.56 semi-auto (when the .222 Remington was modified to become the .223 Remington and adopted for wider mass production standards, in the form of 5.56 NATO) that was adopted by the military in select-fire forms, has been used by the U.S. for over 45 years, and has been used in some form by dozens of other countries (Canada for instance).
