Commentator George J. Bartley. For several years, Ireland had only one TV station, RTE1, which was state-run. By law, a minimum percentage of programming had to be in Irish (I believe the percentage was initially 30%, which ultimately proved unattainable over the long run - it was cheaper to import American programming than to produce fresh content; then there was the inconvenient truth that, whereas 90% of the population had a passive understanding of Irish, it was the first language of less than 10% of viewers). Thus, a commentator who could function bilingually was very much in demand.
