  • noun One of the names (literally, ‘supreme ruler’) used among Christians in China for God, the others being Shin (‘god’ or ‘gods,’ ‘spirit’ or ‘spirits’), used (sometimes with the prefix chin, true) by those who object to the use of Shangti and Tien-chu (‘lord of heaven’), used by Roman Catholics. Also Shangte.
