  • n. An excavation made along the side of a canal or railroad in order to obtain material to form an embankment.
  • n. The formation of a road or canal along the side of a slope, where, the center of the work being nearly on the surface, the ground requires to be cut only on the upper side to form one half of the work, while the material thrown down forms the other half.
