I just finished reading Mike's latest Elric novelette, which will appear in the sixth ELRIC volume, and here's a direct quote regarding Elric's condition: In Melnibone's past .... 'silverskins' like himself had led short, painful lives usually ending in madness and self-destruction.
She spoke to creatures she knew as silverskins, and as she woke she recalled the story of Piel d'Argent, of Le Courbousier Blanc, the silver man, the Prince of Faery, whom the Kakatanawa called White Crow.
The silverskins and hard necks were very small this year, but the elephants (not a true garlic but related to the leek) did very well.
