  • noun A riser; a column of metal which is cast as a part of a large casting for the purpose of increasing the soundness of the casting. It exerts a pressure to fill all cavities while the metal in the mold is fluid and is shrinking during the cooling process, and all bubbles of gas tend to rise into it and remain there.
