- noun A field and laboratory study of soils with regard to their relation to crops, involving their classification and local delimitation, the results being expressed finally in a soil-map. The classification is based mainly on physical features determined from samples, but chemical character and vegetation are also observed. Such surveys are undertaken by the United States government in conjunction with State institutions.
