Identification and study of a few spring flowers, as trillium, bloodroot, hepatica, spring-beauty.
These are all common flowers, and easily observed; and the catalogue might be increased by rare ones, as the white corydalis, the smaller yellow violet, (_V. rotundifolia_,) and the claytonia or spring-beauty.
The spring-beauty, the painted trillium, the fringed polygala, the showy lady's-slipper, are all more striking to look upon, but they do not quite touch the heart; they lack the soul that perfume suggests.
Red clover was opening in the valley below, and wild strawberries just ripening; on the summit the yellow birch was just hanging out its catkins, and the claytonia, or spring-beauty, was in bloom.

"pusley," and the spring-beauty (_Claytonia_) (Fig. 98, _A_) are the commonest examples.
