  • a.k.a. St. Bernhardshund. "Descended from the Tibetan mastiff... It appeared around the year 1000 in the Hospice of St. Bernard de Menthon near the Great St. Bernard Pass (in the Alps). The monks probably crossed the ancient mastiff with the Great Dane and the Great Pyrenees. Their attentive and continuous breeding produced a stupendous dog whose image first appeared on a Swiss coat of arms in 1350. Its use and popularity as a rescue dog began in the middle of the seventeenth century." (Simon & Schuster's Guide to Dogs, 1980)
