It seems to me that while Trotsky is correctly able to challenge an evolutionist view of history, and thus overcome the 'stagist' mindset by arguing for socialist revolutions in 'backward capitalist countries', the continuing hold of the category of 'totality' forces him to still see world capitalism as a single closed entity, moving towards a common destiny.
The strategy for winning marriage equality in Washington over the last few years has been the stagist approach -- a few rights here, a few rights next year, and just this past legislative session, they granted everything but marriage.
