Both kinds should be made either of gold, silver, or at least of tin and pewter (stannum), and should have sheaths or cases.
According to the Roman Missal (De Defectibus, tit. x, n. 1) it may be also made of stannum (an alloy of tin and lead), with the cup gilt on the inside, but authors permit this only by way of exception in case of extreme poverty.
