Etymologies

from The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 4th Edition

From New Latin Staphylinidae, family name, from Staphylinus, type genus, from Greek staphulinos, kind of insect, probably from staphulē, bunch of grapes.

Examples

  • Spider mites, Mononychellus tanajoa and Tetranychus cinnabarinus, sometimes affect the crop; mitetolerant cultivars have been developed and M. tanajoa is attacked by predaceous mites and staphylinid beetles, so that chemical control should not be necessary.

    Chapter 11

  • Finally, it may be mentioned that Lieutenant Nordquist found under stones and pieces of drift-wood a few insects, among them a beetle (a _staphylinid_).
