From Middle English steopbern, from Old English stēopbearn ("stepchild"), equivalent to step- +‎ bairn. Cognate with Danish stedbarn ("stepchild"), Swedish styvbarn ("stepchild"), Icelandic stjúpbarn ("stepchild").
