  • noun An instrument devised by Dove (1847) for demonstrating the formation by interference of the small coronal rings of color seen around any source of light. It consists essentially of a series of close concentric circles scratched by a diamond point on glass. Oertling substituted a rectangular network of straight lines and gave the plate a rapid rotation in its own plane.
