A strange fellow in a bed, or a fellow in a strange bed. Seldom found alone, such fellows are generally referred to in the plural, strange bedfellows.

Actually, I think a bedfellow is simply someone sharing a bed with another fellow--which happened quite frequently in days of yore.
In the "strange" sense, it means "why the hell did you get in bed with that guy, of all people?" Hence, politics makes strange bedfellows. Case in point: Pat Robertson supporting Rudy Giuliani.

I was. But now I come to think of it, can strange bedfellows simply exist, or do they have to be made? Is it legititmate to say of Pat and Rudy, "those two are strange bedfellows". Or do I have to call them an odd couple, while reiterating that politics makes strange bedfellows?

I think you could say those two are strange bedfellows, because everyone would understand (I hope) that you are speaking of political bedfellows, and not actual, which, you know, would be okay as well, but even stranger.
