As for the ratchet strap I started doing this about 4 years ago, you can lean on the sides without worring about the top half of the stand moving, also I feel pretty safe with the climber straped down.

Make sure it's straped on, I went into one and it started to fall over because they didn't put it on right.

I have never hunted out of (or even put up) ladder stands before and I bought two different used ladder stands over the winter. 2009
