  • noun An acanthopterygian fish of the family Acanthuridæ (or Teuthididæ), as Acanthurus (or Teuthis) chirurgus: so called from the lancet-shaped spine on each side of the base of the tail, and also named sea-surgeon, doctor-fish, lancet-fish, and barber.
