  • noun A counting-machine used in counting or keeping tally of the number of passengers entering a boat, the number of parcels delivered or received at a warehouse or freight-yard, etc. It is held in the hand, a lever pressed by the thumb causing the machine to register on a dial the total number at each stroke of the lever.
