  • Passed in 1773, the Tea Act allowed the East India Company to sell directly to American merchants at a low-tax price. Parliament hoped this measure would make English tea competitive in price with tea that American colonists smuggled into the colonies. Colonial merchants saw the Tea Act as supporting a monopoly, and they boycotted the East India Company, leading to the destruction of the tea and other protests.
