  • What a bizarre name!

  • This pub is in Nidd in North Yorkshire. According to Barrie Pepper it was built in 1712 and is thought to have had an original coat of arms with a unicorn, or ass, inside a crown, or band-box. The sign was repainted in 1800 when the figure became Napoleon sitting on an ass sailing a band-box to invade England. Apparently what may appear preposterous and jingoistic nonsense was extremely popular in those days. Later the pub acquired the nickname of 'My Arse in a Band-Box'!

    Thank you Barrie.
