  • Laws passed in 1366, almost two hundred years after the arrival of the first Norman settlers, whose purpose was to prevent further assimilation of the settlers, by legal and religious penalties. Settlers were forbidden to use the Irish language, use Irish names, marry into Irish families, use the Irish mode of dress and play hurling.

The statutes failed gloriously. By the end of the 15th century the English crown ruled only a small area around Dublin, known from the fortified wooden fence that surrounded it as 'The Pale'.
