From Middle English thurhgon, from Old English þurhgān ("to go through, go over, pass through, pierce, penetrate, permeate, pervade"), equivalent to thorough- +‎ go. Cognate with Dutch doorgaan ("to go on, continue, go through, proceed"), German durchgehen ("to go through, pass through").
