- noun A thy-sanopterous insect, Thrips tabaci, possibly of European origin. It damages tobacco in southern Europe, and in the United States is found commonly on onions and many low-growing plants, as well as in the flowers of the orange, lemon, and other fruit-trees, especially in the South.
