trench-brace

• noun A telescope screw-brace used to hold up the side walls or the sheet-piling of a trench. It has plates at each end, with universal joints to fit the irregular surface of the walls, and a windlass for turning the screw and extending the brace until it touches both sides of the trench, preventing caving.
