A suffixation with -an of the Latin adjective tropae(us) ("turning back”, “returning”; in the Plinian phrase ventī tropaeī: “winds blowing from the sea towards the land”, “sea-breezes"), from the Ancient Greek adjective τροπαῖος (tropaios; also in the noun phrase πνοή τροπαία: pnoē tropaia, “an alternating wind, blowing back from sea to land”), from τρόπος (tropos, "turning").
