Yes, Oscar Levant was no great actor, and his one number, where he plays all the instruments in the orchestra (a bit stolen from Buster Keaton's two-reeler, The Playhouse, where Buster was every actor and even the audience, a light metaphoric send-up of Charlie Chaplin's taking credit for every aspect of his films), is not the best; and, yes, the script is short on laughs.
