Usquebaugh seems similar, as noted, to uisce beatha.
I've filled a few saucepans with emergency uisce of course - but every time I go into the kitchen I catch one of the cats drinking from them.
The very name 'whisky' is derived from the ancient Gaelic name for Scotch - "uisce beatha" which means 'water of life'.
"usquebaugh" is probably an anglicized phonetic rendering of the Irish Gaelic phrase "uisce beatha" -- which translates to "water of life".
