From Middle English uprist, opriste, from Old English *ūprist ("uprising"), from Proto-Germanic *ūp (“up”) + Proto-Germanic *ristiz (“ascension, rise”), equivalent to up- +‎ rist (“a rising”). Compare Old English ǣrist ("rising, rising up, resurrection, awakening"), Old High German urrist ("resurrection"), Gothic 𐌿𐍂𐍂𐌹𐍃𐍄𐍃 (urrists, "resurrection").
