Definitions

from The Century Dictionary.

  • noun A packing-ring used on the back of a valve under pressure, so as to prevent such pressure from gaining access to the entire area of the valve and forcing it to its seat so that it will be hard to move. The ring slides upon a finished surface, and is held there to by springs.
