The subway is only part of the story – the RER and the new tramways are significant, but the velib is without a doubt the best innovation anywhere.

My personal preference would have been to see better fare integration with the metro for short term visitors, but the velib has greatly reduced my need to use the bus!

I was astounded by the velib scheme when I first went to Paris after it had been introduced, it really has changed the city so much – and so much for the better.
