From Middle English *warkande, warchende, present participle of warken, werken, warchen ("to pain"), from Old English wærcan ("to be in pain"), from wærc, wræc ("pain, suffering, anguish"), from Proto-Germanic *warkiz (“pain”), from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (“to work, make”), equivalent to wark +‎ -and. Cognate with Icelandic verkja ("to ache, pain").
