An extinct member of the large wader family Scolopacidae, endemic to the French Polynesian island of Moorea (the bird was was called te-te in the local language). It's known only from two paintings (both in London), one by William Ellis and another by J. Webber. Each painting was based on a specimen (both now lost) collected by William Anderson on Moorea during Cook's third voyage in 1777. Like the Tahitian Sandpiper, the White-Winged Sandpiper presumably lived along streams. It's believed to have been driven to extinction by introduced rats in the late 18th century.
