Species formally listed in the US as threatened include Hawaiian goose (nene) Branta sandvicensis, a terrestrial non-migratory goose; honeycreepers, namely akepa Loxops coccineus (R), akiapola'au Hemignathus wilsoni (E), and Hawaiian creeper Oreomystis mana; and Hawaiian petrel Pterodroma sandwichensis (E).

North-facing slopes are dominated by a fir-spruce forest of Abies faxoniana with Picea wilsoni and dragon spruce P. asperata, south-facing slopes by a pine-spruce forest of Pinus tabulaeformis with Chinese white pine P. armandii and Picea asperata.

The East Sudanian Savanna is not typified by high rates of faunal endemism, with only one strictly endemic mammal (a mouse, Mus goundae, VU), and two strictly endemic reptiles (Rhamphiophis maradiensis and Panaspis wilsoni).

The dominant conifers are Abies faxoniana, Picea asperata, P. wilsoni and purple-coned spruce P. purpurea (which is also being planted) with a sub-canopy of Betula albo-sinensisB. utilis, low Acer spp. and fountain bamboo Fargesia/Sinarundinaria nitida which suffered a major die-off after flowering in the 1970s and early 1980s, Fargesia denudata and F. chinensis.

There are, for example, several isolated populations (less than 400 pairs) of the North Island kokako (Callaeas cinerea wilsoni EN) scattered around these northern forest remnants.

The area is of particular importance for several species are of particular conservation concern, notably ivory-billed woodpecker Campephilus principalis baird (CR - D), that is thought to be extinct, Cuban kite Chondrohierax wilsoni (CR - C2b), an endemic species whose populations has been so reduced that maybe just a few couples remain, and the Cuban solenodon Solenodon cubanus (EN - A1cde).
