BTW, if you're using Ubuntu Intrepid, there's a drastically different way to get this working involving either HAL fdi files or a simple xinput script.

This code has not yet landed in the mainline code-bases of the X Server, libXi, inputproto, or xinput, so for now he has this working implementation running in his own Git repositories.

DirectInput and the Windows Multimedia API are not fully supported. thank you very much for the help .. the xinput thing is very confusing, because i don't know any other language then ahk, so I don't really know what to do with the help instructions that are provided on that page. the xbcd drivers on the other hand,,, hmmm, interesting, i'll give that a go and see how things go.

I am having trouble with the touchpad though, it feels sluggish and at times it takes me a couple of goes for the cursor to move having done some googleing I found the following advice on the macbook 5,1 guide. use xinput list to find the id of the trackpad. most like it is named 'bcm5974' then use xinput list-props to get a list of al the properties, the ids and the format for the value then use xinput set-prop to change things
