  • Koothrappali is something which is hard to define.
Although this is a fictional name, names like these are quite common for towns and villages of South-India. The most common one what we can find is Tiruchinapalli. And in South-India many families do have the names of towns and villages as their surnames (family-names or last-names) like Sarvepalli Radhakrishna the Second President of the Independent India.

So technically, the characterization of Dr.Rajesh.K from The Big Bang Theory isn't proper since he's shown as a Hindi guy. Technically he's supposed to be coming from South-India where Hindi is scarce and the region is dominated by languages like Telugu, Tamil or Kannada. And the fascination for Bollywood among South-Indians is relatively less.

But what I find is that the first part of the word *Koothra* is something I heard in North-Indian shows and movies. *Koothra* as I understand is a regional dialect form of the word *Kuttaa* which means *Dog* in Hindi.
