  • GOBLANDER

Back in 97/8 I had joined the pagan rock band Druidspear, and was casting about for a monica for that and my artwork, which was increasingly getting used by them. I was in my workshop one friday evening listening to ‘The News Quiz’ and suddenly, for no apparent reason, Allen Coran, (Father of Victoria Coren Mitchell) came out, apra po of nothing, with the magic phrase, “Did you know that Goblander is an anagram of Old Banger?”.I didn’t hear much for a few seconds, my brain was whirling. ‘Goblander, goblander graphics, goblins, fairies, pagans, druids, 40 something -Bingo!
I acquired my dial up modem the following month and a few weeks later, risking a hefty phone bill, I put Goblander in a search engine and up popped two references, my e-mail,( it did that in those days) and the University of Southampton’s ‘Usage of English Language Dictionary’. Not yet knowing how to access this, I sent them an E-mail, and received a very nice reply informing me that the reference was for ‘18 uses of the word in a book by one Barbara Vine’.
At the time I had no idea who this author was, let alone that it was the alternative monica of Ruth Rendall. However time passed and the connection became apparent and It occurred to me that it might be good to actually get hold of this book, ‘A Fatal Inversion’ and read the tome that gave me my online pseudonym.
The characters chugged about between N London, Nunes, Hadliegh, Sudbury and Colchester in an old morris minor van, which was the eponymous Goblander.

    So now you know.
