Metails, (mee-tayls), n. combining metadata and details, metails is the results of a search (usually forensic and of a legal nature) through the metadata of a computer file to produce a detailed report concerning the contents of that metadata. Often done to find evidence of patent or copyright infringement, or to uncover evidence in any lawsuit or crime investigation. The "story" behind the metadata.

Metails are the compiled results of metadata into a story that reveals the meaning, origin, previous versions and background data of a computer file, most often word processing documents. e.g., "The metails tell of a plot to undermine the government." First coined in 2009 by Richard J. Rabe, freelance writer, boardgame inventor and certified paralegal living near Seattle, Washington.
