  • In the 1991 Sherilyn Fenn vehicle, DESIRE AND HELL AT SUNSET MOTEL; most of the characters are highly influenced by Beat culture. The best example would be a scene about halfway through the DVDs seventh chapter (50 minutes in) where Deadpan (played by David Hewlett) and Auggie (David Johansen) meet in a diner as teens mill around hula-hooping. After someone drops corny sock hop on the jukebox, they get annoyed and move to the table farthest from the music. At one point a hula hoop careens into the scene at the table and Deadpan grabs it, puts on his sunglasses and backs the guy all the way across the diner and into a corner menacingly. He turns off the jukebox and the place goes silent. He stares and then improvs a Beat poem as he backs the guy across the diner again; back to the table.

"You're so damned happy in your safe little circle. Do you

know where you'll be thirty years from now?

Exercising... (begins snapping fingers) ...Bargain hunting,

3-D TV in your back-pack jet,

You'll have a boss on your neck, kids at your feet, head deep in debt, can't get to sleep,

Cause you'll be thinking back to now, going, "I remember then...", but you don't

You missed it, and you'll miss it again,

So when you're lying there crying out...where is enlightenment?

Just remember how...I told you now,

It's in the sound....of one hand. (fingersnap flourish)

Kwatz! Dig?" (pushes guy and his hula hoop out the door and returns to table)

This context implies, "Your mind is blown!"
