  • An ALL CAPS day honoring a baseball icon reminds one of John Irving's lovely novel A Prayer for Owen Meany. The narrator's mother is killed by a foul ball hit by Owen during a little league baseball game. Owen is a tiny sickly boy with a strange little voice Irving described by saying, "I used to think his voice came from another planet. Now I am convinced it was a voice not entirely of this world." Owen's voiced pronouncements throughout the novel are rendered in ALL CAPS.

The book opens with these words: "I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice - not because of his voice - or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother's death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany."

  • I have no idea. I for one couldn't take the sound of his voice for a millisecond. But I had to add it to my list. It was just too good.
