There is nothing wrong with entry level sf -- Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game" has brought more readers into the fold than Bruce Sterling has (I imagine on no objective evidence whatsoever).

I've been reading since I was three and don't remember what order I read these in, but I believe my introduction to SFF was either L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time or Card's Ender's Game.

I also see mostly negative opinions on some of the sequels to Orson Scott Card's Ender series, but I thoroughly enjoyed both Xenocide and Children of the Mind.
