  • Yes, well, vexamples are best reported rather than enshrined for all time in comments.

  • From your point of view, possibly...

(Didn't John warn you people about Wordies?)

    November 19, 2009

  • We were warned! He even gave us a defense kit: wooden stakes, a sack of unplanted wig hair, a can of hairspray, and instructions for conducting a tonsillectomy under field conditions. So far the hairspray has been most useful. It keeps his code in place.

  • It says in the terms that I agree not to upload/publish content that "promotes discrimination, bigotry, racism, hatred, harassment or harm against any individual or group; (vi) is violent or threatening or promotes violence or actions that are threatening to any other person."

I'm not convinced that copying a vexample from one bit of Wordnik to another actually constitutes uploading by me. Secondly, and this is more the point, I don't know how we can reasonably discuss and understand language without looking at real examples. Those examples themselves might be considered offensive in some circles but that's not to say they don't belong in a corpus of genuine language samples. Or that our discussion of same is necessarily offensive. Surely this is not Miss-Martinet's-Very-Naice-Dictionary-Abridged-To-Exclude-Horrid-Wordbeasts-That-Frighten-Your-Parents?

    November 19, 2009

  • That's Mr. Martinet, but no, we're not old-fashioned or censoring or anything like that. You weren't getting smacked down! Maybe we need something opposite of vexamples. charmples? (charm + examples).

FWIW, we do have sentence-ranking taking place right now, which may mean that terrible stuff will disappear and better uses will start to appear near the top of the examples. That one's a cruddy example because it's mostly in caps, it has a weird attribution, and it doesn't add much to our understanding of NIGGA.

  • I'm shuddering already at the prospect of young Jocelynn Aryan Nation whatever here last name is growing up, getting her Wordnik account, and contributing to this discussion. oh wait, weren't those kids forcibly removed from their dingbat parents by Social Services?

But where's Richard Pryor when you need him?
