  • The name TREWITS is the name given to a secret unit and stands for TEEN-REVOLUSIONERE INLIGTING TEIKEN SPAN which is Afrikaans for COUNTER REVOLUTIONARY TARGET TEAM. This unit was a top-secret unit headed by a Chairman who was a senior police officer from the Security Branch and had about 12 members represented by the police's Security Branch, The military's Department of Intelligence (DMI/AMI), The military's Department of Covert Operations(DCI/DKI) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA). The unit operated at the highest level of the apartheid government and was tasked to identify certain enemies of the state both local and foreign and plan and operationally support their execution and elimination. Stephen Sander was a member of this unit from 1989 to 1991. This unit was also called Unit C4/C40 and brother unit on Vlakplaas was called Unit C1/C10.
