  • A beautiful word, not in OED, which I encountered in Anthony Burgess—probably in Mozart and the Wolf Gang. On googling I find it also occurred in Ulyssses. Presumably it means "clarity, limpidity, pellucidity", something of that kind.

    It is of course pronounced /əˈkwæsɨti/. What a pity that the spelling should so strongly call up the alternative and unwanted /ˈækwəˈsɪti/.
