It's from the Zincali, Gypsies of Spain according to George Barrow, who gave a Greek derivation. Presumably the word is Romani.
Figures. Of course one can't find this info anywhere, but if you know the name of said book, teh internets will cough up a whole edition for free on Amazon, of all places!
