  • Slow-worms are like many other squamates in being able to drop the tail voluntarily by contracting muscles (this is known as caudal autotomy), but they do this more than is usual, with most individuals having autotomised their tails several times.

  • Here is the sentence I found the word in: "A very large adult individual. It has shed (autotomised) most of the cerata which is why you can see more of the back than usual. These cerata are just starting to regrow, and they appear as small brown pointed ‘tentacles’."
