chained_bear commented on the word cappeddi
"Their earthly masters, known as galantuomini (the gentry), included nearly everyone who was not a peasant, fisherman, or artisan. Members of the gentry did no manual labor and could easily be identified since they customarily wore cappeddi or hats instead of caps, the headgear of lower-class males. To rebellious peasants, these cappeddi were a symbol of oppression."
