  • "Their earthly masters, known as galantuomini (the gentry), included nearly everyone who was not a peasant, fisherman, or artisan. Members of the gentry did no manual labor and could easily be identified since they customarily wore cappeddi or hats instead of caps, the headgear of lower-class males.
