I think that today, this is more commonly spelled chitterlings or chitlins, but this is the spelling from the book (see list at right). I'm especially fond of its second meaning, in light of the first:
"The bowels. There is a rumpus among my bowels, i.e. I have the colic. The frill of a shirt."
