I got my ear pierced one lunchtime because a girl dared me to. But it was the right ear, which I soon learned was "the gay ear". I didn't want everyone thinking I was gay, so the next day I got my left ear pierced, too. But the place I'd been to the day before was closed that day, so I went somewhere else and ended up with asymmetric piercings. Then one of them went septic, and my mother used her long fingernails to dig the steel out of the swelling; it was very painful. I dropped the whole idea soon after.
